Speaking at the Republican convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Thursday, Trump said that the “planet is teetering on the edge of World War III,” highlighting ongoing conflicts in Europe and the Middle East. He pointed to rising tensions in Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, and across Asia, suggesting that the world is on the brink of another global conflict.
Trump slammed Joe Biden’s administration for its handling of international crises, saying that if he were in office, there would be no "terrible war between Russia and Ukraine."
He drew comparisons to previous administrations, noting that under President Bush Russia attacked Georgia, under President Obama Russia seized Crimea, and under the current administration Russia invaded Ukraine, but that during his presidency, "Russia took nothing."
According to reports, a phone call between Trump and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was scheduled for Friday.
Trump also addressed U.S. alliances, saying that many allied countries have been taking advantage of the United States for years, resulting in job losses and reduced incomes for Americans. Trump vowed to rectify the issue, as he believes he did during his first term.
Trump went on to cite Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who declared that "Russia was afraid of Trump. China was afraid of him, everyone was afraid of him, and nothing happened. The whole world lived in peace, and now the world is exploding around us."
