The
eventual decision in this matter will belong to the General Council of the city. However, according to the councilors from USR, this initiative is “an
important step in supporting democratic values and human rights.”
“The name of the person [killed by the Russian authorities] will appear in their [embassy] official documents.
Alexei Navalny Street will become their mailing address,” wrote Vlad Voiculescu, leader of the capital's USR.
“The name change is not just a symbolic gesture. It is a clear signal that
confirms our support for the fight for freedom, human rights, and democracy. It is an expression of our solidarity with all those who, like Navalny, have risked their freedom, and even their lives, to defend their country against corruption and authoritarianism,” Voiculescu wrote in a statement on Facebook.
He added that in this way, “the courage and sacrifice” of Navalny will be honored.
An online petition regarding the change of the street name has also been posted on the internet, which, so far, has been signed by around 900 people.
Russian prison authorities announced on Friday that the leading opposition figure, Alexei Navalny,
died suddenly in a penal colony above the Arctic Circle in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug District, in the far north.
Navalny reportedly
“felt unwell” and “lost consciousness.” Despite the ambulance being called and resuscitation attempts made, the opposition figure died, as stated by the prison authorities.
In January, it has been
three years since Navalny was arrested and imprisoned upon his return to Russia from Germany, where he was receiving treatment after a poisoning attempt, most likely carried out by Russian special services.
Authorities have initiated further criminal cases against him, resulting in
sentences totaling over 30 years of imprisonment.
