The accident occurred around 3 pm (local time) on the A11
highway in the Uckermark district of Germany’s northeastern Brandenburg state.
Initial findings suggest the FlixBus coach, carrying 13 passengers and a driver, veered off the road shortly after the Uckermark motorway junction, collided with a barrier, and overturned.
The fatalities were identified as a 29-year-old woman from an Eastern European country and a 48-year-old German citizen, reported local German radio station Radio Berlin Brandenburg (rbb).
The coach, which was traveling from Berlin to Szczecin in northwestern Poland, had Polish registration plates.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
FlixBus issued a statement saying: “Our thoughts are with all those affected by this accident and their relatives. The exact circumstances of the accident are not yet known.
“Of course, we are working closely with the local authorities and the rescue services on site and will do everything we can to clarify the cause of the accident quickly and completely.”
A German police spokesperson said the coach driver, likely a Polish woman, may have been driving “at an inappropriate speed during heavy snowfall,” reported rbb.
On Sunday, Brandenburg police issued a statement saying that adverse weather conditions were the probable cause of the accident.
