The crash occurred on the S7 expressway in the direction of the coastal city of Gdynia. Among the victims were children, the police have said.

The press officer of the district police station in Pruszcz Gdański Karol Kościuk told the Polish state news agency on Saturday morning that the truck driver had been detained.

“Preliminary findings are that a 37-year-old truck driver drove into the rear of the preceding vehicles.”

“The man has been detained... He was tested for sobriety by police officers and was sober. His blood was secured for further toxicological testing,” Kościuk said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.
The section of the S7 road between Lipce and Gdańsk in the direction of Gdynia is currently impassable, and police operations are still ongoing at the scene. The difficulties may last until 12 p.m.
