Authorities have identified 45-year-old Aco Martinović as the shooter. According to initial reports, Martinović had been drinking heavily in a bar before storming out following a heated argument.

At 5:30 p.m., he returned armed and killed four people, including a family member, the bar owner and the bar owner’s two sons.

Martinović then continued his shooting spree in three other locations before going on the run. Police and anti-terrorist units eventually tracked him down to the Humci suburb of the town. With the net closing in, the gunman shot himself in the head.

Police commissioner Lazar Šćepanović said: “The police surrounded him, creating a ring. He was in a hopeless situation and surrounded. After being commanded to drop his weapon, he shot himself in the head. An attempt was made to transport him to the KCGG [hospital] but he succumbed to his injuries.”

Among the dead are three women and two brothers aged 10 and 13.

As more details surface, it has been revealed that Martinović was well-known for his erratic behavior and had previous brushes with the law for firearms possession.

Writing on X, President Jakov Milatović said he was “shocked and stunned.” He added: “Instead of holiday joy, we have been gripped by sadness over the loss of innocent lives.”

Declaring three days of national mourning, Prime Minister Milojko Spajić said that the incident had “shrouded the country in black.”

At a press conference, Interior Minister Danilo Šaranović pledged to clamp down on the country’s gun culture: “Be assured that the Government of Montenegro will present a plan of urgent measures starting tomorrow, because as a society we must not allow individuals to deprive people of their lives in such a brutal manner,” he said.

This is not the first time that Cetinje—the country’s former royal capital—has been rocked by a mass shooting. In 2022, the picturesque town of 15,000 was plunged into mourning after 33-year-old Vučko Borilović shot and killed 10 people before being killed himself in a shootout with police.
