The 39-year-old is accused of carrying out the attack on Kultorvet Square in central Copenhagen. He reportedly managed to strike Frederiksen on the shoulder despite security measures.

The premier sustained a minor injury and was taken to hospital.

The Polish suspect, who has lived in Denmark for several years, faces a potential prison sentence of up to eight years. He has pleaded not guilty, claiming to have no recollection of the incident.

Prosecutors say the suspect was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the attack.

The incident occurred on June 7, three weeks after a gunman targeted Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and a month before an assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.
