Radosław Chwedoruk had gone to work as normal in the small town of Łosice where after sorting the day’s mail he had set off on his round, after changing his mind about having a day off.

But after reaching the nearby village of Stare Biernaty, the young postie came across a man lying in his front yard drenched in blood.

Chwedoruk told the Poczta Polska post office website: “The gentleman was lying there, his hand wrapped in a bloody shirt.

“He was semi-conscious next to a scooter, and there was blood everywhere.”

Springing into action, Chwedoruk stemmed the bleeding and kept the man from losing consciousness while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

According to Poczta Polska, the injured man had severed the veins in his forearm while working in the garage. Seeking help, the man mounted his scooter only to collapse in the yard.
“Were it not for Mr Radek and his quick thinking, a tragedy would have happened,” said Anna Korycińska, head of the Łosice post office. “He saved him at literally the last moment.”

While the accident occurred at the end of August, it is only now that the post office made the news public.

The man is now back home and recovering from his ordeal.

Chwedoruk, who only joined the post office earlier this year, has modestly played down his role and revealed he doesn’t expect any recognition for actions.

Asked about the incident, Chwedoruk said: “We only have one life, so to save one is something wonderful.”
