The event, organized by the non-governmental organization “Heart of Azov’s Family,” brought together veterans, soldiers, families of the fallen, and citizens from across the country. Participants chanted, “Glory to the living, remembrance of the fallen, fight for the captives!” as they marched through the city's streets.
The march, which aimed to honor the nation’s military personnel, took on a deeply symbolic role as it sought to unite Ukrainians in remembrance. “This event has a unifying character,” said Vira Lytvynenko, head of the organization.
“We unite all units, all soldiers from all front areas. Veterans, soldiers, families of the fallen, families of captives, and residents of the capital have joined us.”
Many participants were relatives of soldiers who remain in Russian captivity.
Lytvynenko said, “Most of the people present today are families of the deceased and families of captives waiting for their loved ones to return from Russian captivity.” Some families have been waiting for their relatives’ release since the onset of the war in 2014.
The march began on Taras Shevchenko Boulevard and proceeded along Kyiv’s main street, Khreshchatyk, before arriving at the Wall of Remembrance at St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery. Flowers were laid in tribute to those who died defending Ukraine, and the event concluded at St. Sophia Square.
For many, the event carried a personal weight. “Someone’s son, husband, or father gave their life for me,” said Roman, a 23-year-old participant. “While I stand here, someone is shedding blood for the existence of my country.”
October 1 has been observed as Defenders and Defendresses Day since 2022, with this year’s march symbolizing a nation’s ongoing resilience amid war.
