The survey published on Monday highlights a notable decline in public attention to the EU presidency compared to Poland's first tenure in 2011, when 64% of Poles were aware of the event.
CBOS noted that awareness of the presidency tends to be higher among those with an interest in politics, commenting that “these are typically people who are interested in politics and follow the events in the political arena.”
Despite the limited awareness, the survey found strong backing for Poland’s upcoming role. A strong 80% of respondents expressed support for the presidency, while only 13% opposed it, and 7% remained undecided.
This widespread approval reflects the public’s positive view of Poland’s leadership within the EU, even if many are unaware of the specifics.
Additionally, the poll showed a favorable outlook on the potential impact of the presidency, with 68% of respondents believing the presidency will enhance Poland’s reputation within Europe, and 59% hoping it would increase Poland's influence in EU decision-making.
Poland’s presidency will focus on a number of key priorities, including defense and security, energy transformation and strengthening the agricultural sector.
These issues are expected to be central to Poland’s agenda as it takes on a leadership role in the EU, particularly given the ongoing geopolitical tensions in Europe and the urgent challenges surrounding climate change and energy security.
Currently, Hungary holds the presidency, having assumed the role in July 2024. Poland’s presidency will mark a significant opportunity for the country to shape EU policies and further its strategic interests, both within the bloc and on the international stage.
The survey was conducted between November 9 and 21, 2024, on a representative sample of 981 adults.
Despite the general lack of awareness regarding Poland's presidency, the poll reflects a broader sense of optimism among Poles about the potential benefits of the country assuming a leading role in the EU for the second time.
