The Racibórz Dolny reservoir is usually dry but has a maximum capacity of 185 million cubic meters of water when needed. It has been holding back surplus water from the Oder since September 15, but has now finished performing its emergency function, the national water management authority said on Sunday.

“By being activated at the optimal moment, the reservoir captured the entire flood wave," Polish Waters said in a statement. “The actions of this hydrotechnical facility minimized the effects of flooding in three provinces adjacent to the Oder: Silesia, Lower Silesia, and Opolskie.”

The reservoir will now undergo maintenance and technical inspection, Polish Waters said. The water authority said the situation had stabilized locally and the warning level had been reduced. However, a ban on using local levees has been extended until October 6.
