The survey results show that 56% are in favor of EU membership, while 28% are against it. In contrast, 42% of respondents want to see Moldova in the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) while 37% are against such a union.
These indicators have remained at similar levels in recent years. Analysts point out at the same time that supporters of EU accession are mostly people from the large Moldovan diaspora abroad, whose votes are not included in the polls.
The pollsters also asked Moldovans about their support for a union with Romania. 38% said they would like to join such a union, while 50% were against it.
What about NATO?
Traditionally, support for NATO membership remains low at 28%, with 54% of respondents opposed.
Political scientists explain these numbers by Moldova’s neutral status, as well as the long-standing influence of Russia and the narrative of pro-Russian forces about the potential danger of joining the Alliance.
Following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, neighboring Moldova applied for EU membership in March 2022, was granted EU candidate status in June 2022 and in December 2023 EU leaders agreed to start accession negotiations.
