In a case that has gripped Poland since 2010, Iwona Wieczorek mysteriously disappeared in the early hours of July 17 after a night out in the seaside resort of Sopot.

Leaving a nightclub at around 2.50am following an argument with friends, the then 19-year-old decided to walk the 5km route back to her home in the neighboring city of Gdańsk.

Last seen on CCTV footage a few hundred meters from her home, she then disappeared without a trace.

Despite a massive police operation and investigations by private detectives, journalists, a Netflix documentary and even a medium, the 19-year-old has not been seen or heard of since.

But now police say they have received new information that the driver of a white Fiat may be connected with her disappearance.

In a statement posted on social media, police said: “A new clue has emerged in the case of the missing Iwona Wieczorek, which may help explain the mysterious disappearance from 14 years ago.

“Police officers from the capital's Department for Combating Criminal Terror and Homicide, who are investigating the case, received information that the driver of a white Fiat Cinquecento may be related to the woman's disappearance.

“The vehicle was moving on July 17, 2010, at 5:07 in Gdańsk along Pomorska Street near Reagan Park.”

Describing the information as “completely new”, private detectives working on the case say the driver could have been a security guard at a nearby ‘underworld’ eatery.

Wojciech Koszczyński from the Tricity Detective Group said: “Assuming the late hour and the specific nature of the area, we think it may be a person associated with security or a group of people who helped security guards.

“From what we learned from our informants, a local criminal group controlled this restaurant.

“A Russian-speaking person also appeared. We think that people from the East had influence in this place.”

He added: “The area we are investigating is very close to Iwona Wieczorek's place of residence.

“It must be assumed that she could have known many people who frequented this place.

“This is what we want to determine and investigate. We are investigating this thread because it is completely new.”
