They “smell like a sausage, look like a sausage and grill like traditional sausages,” said Dr. Przemysław Kowalczewski from the University of Life Sciences in Poznań, western Poland, which developed the meat substitutes.
The innovative products have a chance of conquering the market, according to Polish newspaper Super Express.
The bangers and burgers are not ordinary plant-based alternatives. Dr. Kowalczewski explained that potato protein is not easy to process, and its natural smell and color were a challenge.
“It smells like a potato, which is already a drawback, so it has to be properly masked. It is a bit grayish, so it has to be properly balanced with other proteins,” Kowalczewski told the radiopoznan.fm website.
The products were designed to meet the health requirements for a Central European diet, Super Express reported.
They have been subjected to numerous consumer tests and, according to Super Express, the sausages in particular left tasters licking their fingers.
