Policymakers in all three Baltic nations have recently discussed placing landmines along their borders with Russia and Belarus to hinder a potential attack.

However, according to the latest poll for the newspaper Rzeczpospolita, 54% of Poles are against such a solution on Poland’s border with Russia.

Only 28.3% of the participants backed this form of border defense. Almost 17.7% were undecided.

Among the opponents of land mines are supporters of the center-right Third Way, the newspaper reported.

“The foreign ministry and defense ministry have said that for the time being they are not planning to put mines on the border with Russia and Belarus,” it wrote.

The Ottawa Convention does not allow the use of anti-personnel mines. However, the ban does not include anti-tank mines, which can be found in Poland’s military equipment.

The survey was conducted by IBRiS on a representative sample of 1,071 Poles between February 23 and 24, 2024.
