This particular holiday has been celebrated since 2020. In his work, known as On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres, this outstanding Polish astronomer described his interpretation of the heliocentric theory, which revolutionized world science. Copernicus was a prolific scientist, and he also succeeded in other fields, including economics, law, medicine and cartography.

The establishment of a public holiday was "an expression of the highest appreciation for the achievements of native scientists in over 1,000 years of history of our nation and state." The project's authors emphasized how for centuries, science has been a key impulse for intellectual, social and economic development.

Polish Science Day is intended as an inspiration for following in the footsteps of Polish researchers and strengthening interest in science.

The latest data from the Information Processing Center - OPI showed that there are a total of 578 universities and scientific institutions in Poland, bringing together over 1.2 million students, more than 24,000 doctoral students and roughly 82,000 full-time academic teachers.
