The man’s nationality was confirmed to the Polish Press Agency (PAP) on Thursday by his brother-in-law but on Friday, Andrzej Szejna, Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister, told reporters that the victim’s parents renounced their Polish citizenship in the 1980s, and the man was therefore not a Polish citizen, meaning that the Polish prosecutor's office has no legal grounds to take part in the proceedings. Therefore, the murder will be investigated by Swedish prosecutors.

“We can’t do anything more in this matter," Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Szejna said.

The 39-year-old was shot dead on Wednesday evening after an altercation with a rowdy group of youths. He died in front of his 12-year-old son, whom he was escorting to a local swimming pool in the Skärholmen district of Stockholm.

“There were four or five youths shouting something at them in the underpass. Michał stopped and approached them, and then they shot him in the face,” Elias, the victim’s brother-in-law, told the Swedish media.

On Thursday, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson paid tribute to the victim at the site of his tragic death. People continue to pay tribute to the victim in the form of flowers and candles.

South Side

The death of Michał makes this the third shooting in the Skärholmen district, and the second fatal one, since the beginning of March alone.

Skärholmen is notorious for the turf war waged between local drug-dealing youth gangs.

“We still don't know why the murder occurred, but it would not have been possible were it not for the youths being armed,” Andreas Bagoly, acting chief of police for Stockholm’s South Side, stressed in a statement. He also said that the police are close to apprehending the perpetrator.

Another statement issued by the police on Saturday stated that the police are gathering and analyzing evidence, including CCTV footage and witness reports. No other information has been released so as not to, according to the police, jeopardize the investigation.

Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen wrote that the man showed a “civic attitude” and had previously contacted the police regarding youth groups dealing drugs in the area.
