The court in Copenhagen, the Danish capital, found the 39-year-old guilty of attacking a public servant. It also ruled that he should be deported from Denmark after serving his time, and barred from returning for six years.

The Pole, whom the authorities haven’t named, has been living in Denmark for five years. He attacked the Danish premier on Kultorvet Square in central Copenhagen on June 7.

Though Frederiksen was surrounded by security, the man managed to approach her and hit her on the shoulder.

“The defendant struck the prime minister with a clenched fist on the right shoulder [and] the prime minister was thrown off balance,” the court said.

The man was disappointed with the verdict but decided not to appeal, said his lawyer, Henrik Karl Nielsen.

Since the assailant has already been in custody for two months, he will have to serve only two out of the four months of his sentence, Nielsen added.

The attack, which took place two days before European Parliament elections, left Frederiksen with a minor neck injury and led her to cancel several engagements while warning of rising aggression in public places.

The assault took place three weeks after a gunman opened fire on Slovakia’s prime minister, Robert Fico and a month before an assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.
