The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokesman Paweł Wroński said that the Poles had requested help in fleeing the country and that the flight had been a humanitarian transport carried out using a Polish plane.

Wroński said: “Tonight, a plane from Beirut landed in Warsaw with a group of several dozen Polish and other citizens as part of a humanitarian transport.

“The flight was carried out by the Polish Army.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is monitoring the situation in Lebanon, and the Polish government is prepared for various scenarios.”

Slovakia also sent a military plane to Lebanon on Friday to evacuate its citizens and citizens of other countries, including Poland.

The Slovak Foreign Ministry did not say how many Poles were on board.

No country has launched a large-scale military evacuation yet, though some are chartering aircraft as Beirut airport stays open.

Western nations have also drafted contingency plans to evacuate their citizens following a dramatic escalation in the conflict between Israel and the Lebanese armed movement Hezbollah, coupled with Iran's missile attack on Israel on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

The situation in the Middle East is the tensest it has been in months and is raising fears of a regional war.

Iran fired a salvo of around 200 ballistic missiles at Israel on Tuesday in retaliation for the deaths of the leaders of Hezbollah, Hamas and a senior commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. Most of the missiles were shot down.

Israel has announced retaliation, while Iran has threatened to attack if the Jewish state responds with force.
