Regina Chłopecka, who lost her hearing as a child, described the life-changing event as the “most beautiful Christmas gift.”
“I can hear things I’ve never experienced before, like the ticking of a clock. Most importantly, I can hear my granddaughters! Sometimes I even tell them, ‘Quieter, kids, I hear you too well!’” she said with a smile.
Revolutionary Procedure Brings New Hope
The surgery involved implanting a bone-anchored hearing device, a minimally invasive procedure that places a titanium implant in the temporal bone behind the ear.
“The operation is short and doesn’t require general anesthesia or stitches, making it especially safe for seniors,” said Dr. Beata Kociszewska, head of the otolaryngology department.
Weeks after the surgery, a speech processor is attached, transmitting sound through bone conduction.
Fully covered by Poland’s public healthcare system, the treatment includes the processor, which would otherwise cost between €4,600 and €7,000, depending on the manufacturer.
