Leading contributors were institutions like the
University of Zielona Góra, the
AGH University of Science and Technology, and the
Jagiellonian University, as highlighted by the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland.
Globally, the EPO received a total of 199,275 applications, an increase of 2.9% from the previous year. The number of patents granted also surged to 104,609, a significant 28% increase from 2022.
Poland’s growth in patent applications stands out,
growing nearly four times faster than the global average. Polish innovators were granted 258 patents in 2023,
marking a 37.2% increase from the previous year.
Among European nations, Poland ranks seventh in application rate growth in terms of the rate of increase in applications and tenth globally. Universities and research institutes lead the way, with seven out of the top ten contributors coming from this sector.
Notable companies like Fakro PP, Polbionica, and Adamed Pharma are also among the top patent filers.
On the global stage, Poland ranks 25th among patent-filing countries. The first places are taken by: the United States (48,000 applications), Germany (25,000), Japan (22,000), China (20,000), and South Korea (12,000).
A significant portion of EPO applications—43%—come from companies and inventors within the 39 member states of the European Patent Organization, with the remaining 57% coming from outside Europe.
