The soldiers from Poland’s 2nd Hrubieszów Reconnaissance Regiment had been carrying out airborne training exercises on Monday and had intended to land at a drop zone in the Błędów Desert 9km away.

But after strong winds blew them off course, 12 paratroopers found themselves descending onto the village, with one landing on the roof of a house and another onto a powerline as stunned locals watched on.

In a statement, the regiment’s Major Agnieszka Gdula said: “As a result of a sudden increase in wind speed and a change in its direction by approximately 65 degrees, which occurred after the jumpers left the aircraft, 12 jumpers landed outside the Błędów Desert drop zone.

“As a result of the unintended landing, the roof of the building was damaged and the jumper suffered a knee injury.

“The soldier was taken to a medical facility, and the officer on duty at the drop zone prepared photographic documentation and wrote a note with the owner of the building.”

Reserve Lieutenant Commander Maksymilian Dura from the defence24.pl website, told TVN24 that there is not much room for maneuver when landing a parachute.

He said: “In strong winds, such an event can occur. Especially when jumping from a great height. Such situations happen.”
