Five districts of the capital were hit in the assault, killing one person and injuring seven, Al Jazeera reported. The head of the city's military administration, Serhiy Popko, told the news service Russia had used hypersonic Kinzhal missiles and Iskander/KN-23 ballistic missiles.

Russia’s defense ministry said the attack was in response to Ukrainian strikes on a chemicals plant in southern Russia earlier in the week.

“In response to the actions of the Kyiv regime, supported by its Western handlers, a combined strike with long-range precision weapons was launched today,” the ministry said in a statement.

A spokesman for Ukraine’s Air Force Command said five districts of the capital were hit.

“The enemy also used a Kh-59 guided air missile and, this morning at about 07:00, launched five ballistic missiles of the Iskander-M and KN-23 types,” local news agency Ukrinform quoted Major Illia Yevlash as saying. “Five districts of Kyiv were struck. In particular, the enemy targeted various sites with ballistic missiles. Thanks to the work of our air defense, all five ballistic missiles were shot down.”

Major Yevlash said debris falling from the interceptions had caused secondary detonations and damaged infrastructure and residential buildings.

He also urged residents to heed air-raid warnings.

"Even if all missiles are intercepted, blast waves still pose a severe threat to life and health,” he said. “Do not ignore air raid sirens – take shelter immediately."
