The root vegetable, which is used widely as a remedy for colds, infections and viruses, has until now been imported all the way from India and China. But that’s about to change.
Scientists from the Life Sciences Department at the University of Poznań announced on October 29 that they have cultivated a homegrown version of the plant after two years of study, according to the local broadcaster TVP Poznań.
The plant will, however, be grown in greenhouses rather than being exposed to the sometimes-harsh Polish climate.
Ginger root has anti-inflammatory properties and has been used as a cure for sore throat, heartburn, cough and even nausea.
