Confirmation of the man’s nationality was provided to the Polish Press Agency (PAP) on Thursday by his brother-in-law, who described the family as being
in a state of profound distress.
The incident unfolded as the man
and his 12-year-old son were making their way to a swimming pool in the Skarholmen district of Stockholm. Reports indicate that they encountered a group of youths in an underpass, leading to an exchange of words between the man and the teenagers. Tragically, the altercation escalated,
culminating in a fatal gunshot that claimed the man’s life, witnessed by his own son.
Swedish media outlets, including Aftonbladet and Expressen, shed light on the man’s civic-mindedness,
noting his previous efforts to alert authorities about youth groups involved in drug activities in the area. Described as unwilling to expose his son to such an environment, his untimely death has sent shockwaves through the community.
While Swedish police
have refrained from commenting on the motives of the perpetrator, no arrests have been made thus far.
On Thursday, mourners gathered at the scene of the tragedy,
offering condolences with floral tributes and candlelight vigils. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also expressed his intention to visit the site, vowing to bolster the spirits of the affected community.
In a statement, Kristersson emphasized resilience in the face of adversity, asserting that the government remains steadfast in its commitment to combating criminal elements.
“We will never give up. We will defeat the gangs,” he wrote.
The recent spate of violence in the Skarholmen district, which has claimed two lives and left another injured since March, underscores the urgent need for collective action.
