The Helios GPU, recognized as Poland’s fastest supercomputer, is housed within AGH University's Academic Computer Center Cyfronet. This marks a historic achievement as it has placed four supercomputers in the TOP500 list. This announcement was made at an industry conference this week in Hamburg.

The Helios system also ranked third on the Green500 list of energy-efficient supercomputers, showcasing its outstanding performance in environmental sustainability.

This supercomputer features a remarkable theoretical computational power of 35 PFLOPS, supported by over 108,000 computational cores and 460 TB of RAM, offering a data throughput of nearly 2 TB/s.

The installation, completed in December 2023 under the EuroHPC PL project, was a collaborative endeavor with Hewlett-Packard Enterprise. It utilized the HPE Cray EX4000 platform, which is also employed in the construction of the world’s fastest supercomputers.

AGH’s representative, Anna Muszyńska, said that the significance of Helios in advancing research and commercial applications across various fields, including chemistry, physics, materials engineering, energy, medicine, biology, and artificial intelligence.

Each year, Helios will support hundreds of research projects, leveraging its computational capacity for scientific advancement and economic development.

Muszyńska also highlighted the energy efficiency of Helios’s GPU partition, which achieved third place on the Green500 list, outperforming smaller systems from Germany and the U.K., thus confirming its status as the most energy-efficient supercomputer in the TOP500 list’s top 100.

Not the only one among elite

Alongside the Helios GPU, three other supercomputers from AGH University's Academic Computer Center, Cyfronet, have also made the prestigious TOP500 list, underscoring the university's formidable prowess in computing technology. These systems include Athena, ranked 177th, Helios CPU at 305th, and Ares in the 444th position.

Additionally, four more Polish supercomputers have earned spots in the prestigious ranking. The Proxima supercomputer at PCSS Poznań (western Poland) leads this group, securing the 76th position. Following closely, the Lem at the Wrocław Centre for Networking and Supercomputing (south-western Poland) holds the 80th spot. The Kraken-Fregata at Gdańsk University of Technology (northern Poland) is ranked 154th. Completing this lineup, the Altair at PCSS Poznań stands at 250th.

Together, these systems exemplify the robust computational capabilities and diverse technological innovations characterizing Poland’s research infrastructure.
