The suspect is reported to have walked into a police station covered in blood shortly after 11pm after hiding in a back garden and told officers: “I am the one you are looking for,” according to Germany’s Bild newspaper.
A joint statement from Duesseldorf police and prosecutors said: “The involvement of this person is currently under intensive investigation.”
The attack took place on Friday evening during a festival celebrating the 650-year history of Solingen, a city in western Germany.
Authorities said that the suspect is linked to a refugee home in Solingen, which was searched on Saturday.
Der Spiegel, citing unnamed security sources, reported that the suspect's clothes were stained with blood.
The Syrian man arrived in Germany in 2022 and submitted an asylum application. Due to the ongoing civil war in Syria, he was granted subsidiary protection in Germany, Der Spiegel reported.
The police have so far not commented on the Spiegel report.
In a statement on its Telegram account on Saturday, Islamic State referred to the attacker as a “soldier of the Islamic State”.
“He carried out the attack in revenge for Muslims in Palestine and everywhere,” it said.
However, the connection between the attacker and Islamic State remains unclear.
