Romania is still reeling from the aftermath of severe floods that caused widespread devastation and killed at least seven in Galați County, a low-lying area in the Danube River basin in the east of the country.

The latest evacuation orders have now been extended to the Argeș and Brașov counties in the center of the country, as well as Galați and Vaslui in the east, after Romania’s National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA) issued flood alerts.

The alerts are to remain in effect until October 1 and operations have been suspended at all ports in the southeastern counties of Constanța and Tulcea.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said: “From my point of view, the action was professional, by the book, and I am very glad that we have taken some preventive measures so as to rule out loss of life.”

Raed Arafat, head of Romania’s Department for Emergency Situations said: “At the moment the situation is under control.”

Storm Boris battered Central and Eastern Europe at the beginning of September, bringing torrential rain and severe flooding to Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Romania.

Scientists have said extreme rainfall and flooding have become increasingly common and more intense because of “human-caused climate breakdown.”

According to the EU’s crisis management commissioner, Janez Lenarčič, flooding across Central and Eastern Europe and Portugal’s deadly forest fires were joint proof of the climate crisis.
