The Moldovan government’s crisis center said coal reserves at the Kurchugan power station are being used at the rate of 1,000 tonnes a day. The authorities of Transnistria had previously said the Kurchugan facility had sufficient coal to last 50 days.
The plant was previously powered by Russian gas, deliveries of which ceased with the termination of a transit agreement with Ukraine on January 1. Last week, officials said the lack of gas had forced the closure of all industrial companies in the region except food producers.
Moldovan media reported on Sunday that Transnistria is subject to power outages. The NewsMaker website said electricty woule be cut between 1200 and 1600 local time on Sunday.
The Moldovan government crisis center has said police and rescue services stand ready to assist people in need.
