The European Commission (EC) is currently contemplating withdrawing its suspension clause pertaining to rule of law procedures in Poland.

In December 2017, the body initiated its Article 7 procedure against Poland in reaction to perceived threats to the rule of law and EU principles in the nation.

Termed as a ‘nuclear weapon’ in Europe, Article 7 is focused on instances of infringement of the European Union's fundamental principles.

Poland’s Justice Minister Adam Bodnar and EU Minister Adam Szlapka are slated to introduce a strategy for Poland's judicial reform in Brussels on Tuesday.

The EC commissioner for justice, Didier Reynders, has indicated that Poland's government's pledges to reform have been quite impressive so far.

He noted that the EC will appraise the proposals and acknowledged that Poland has made certain pledges concerning the overhaul of its judicial system.

Based on the documentation received from Poland, Reynders mentioned that the EC will promptly offer an assessment of whether the Article 7 procedure for Poland can be concluded.
