In addition to attempting to uncover the locations of secret airfields where the U.S.-manufactured planes are stationed, the 12 individuals also passed information on air defenses to their Kremlin spymasters, according to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).
“Some of the uncovered agents are [Ukrainian] deserters, who willfully went AWOL from the military. They were recruited by the Russian special services while they were on the run from law enforcement,” the SBU said in a statement published on social media.
The suspected spies are believed to have operated individually and were spread across five administrative regions, with the head of the network operating out of the southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region, the SBU said.
The members of the alleged spy network could face between eight years and life in prison.
