Lt. Col. Joshua Camara’s body was discovered on Tuesday after military police broke into an apartment block in the city’s Grunwald district, not far from where the U.S. Army V Corps is based.

The Corps’ spokesman, Maj. Joe Bush, said on Thursday that although Polish police are conducting the main investigation, the Army’s Criminal Investigative Division is carrying out its own probe.

He added that this was commonplace when a soldier dies and said that there was “no evidence of foul play.”

It was earlier reported that investigators had ruled out murder but were looking at the possibility of “unintentional manslaughter”.

A decorated officer with over 20 years of military experience, the 45-year-old Lieutenant Colonel had served at the Poznań base as a public affairs officer since June.

He was the recipient of the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal and Meritorious Service Medal, among other awards.

In a statement, V Corps chief of staff Col. Kevin Jackson said: “Our thoughts and sympathies are with Lt. Col. Josh Camara’s family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.

“He was an outstanding leader and mentor, and we will remember his legacy and impact.”

An autopsy will now be carried out to determine the cause of death.

Deputy district prosecutor for military affairs in Poznań, Colonel Bartosz Okoniewski, said: “The results of the autopsy, which may be conducted this week, will be important in this case.

“The results of toxicological tests will also be very important for us, but they always take a little longer.”
