Piszczek is a club legend at Dortmund, after more than a decade of service between 2010-2021, making 264 appearances for the club.

“I'm very happy to be back at Borussia Dortmund, this time as an assistant coach,” Łukasz Piszczek told TVP Sport.

Last year he turned down the chance to become Fernando Santos’ assistant with the Polish national team, which was a wise move in hindsight, given the Portuguese’s calamitous time in charge. Piszczek has made his coaching aspirations clear for some time. In March 2023, he was appointed player-coach of Polish third-division LKS-Goczałkowice Zdrój, one of his former clubs.

Last spring, he completed the UEFA A license, and this spring he passed the exams for the UEFA Pro course. He joins João Tralhão and Ertuğrul Arslan, who will also provide support for Şahin.

Piszczek enjoyed a successful time with Dortmund, winning two Bundesliga titles (201 ,2012) and three German Cups (2012, 2017, 2021) He also played in the Champions League final, losing out to Bayern Munich in 2013.
Dortmund experienced a mixed season, finishing an underwhelming fifth place in the league, their lowest position since 2018, although they enjoyed a surprisingly impressive Champions League campaign, reaching the final, just coming up short in the final against Real Madrid.

Former coach Edin Terzić decided to resign at the end of the season and, subsequently, the club has been seeking to refresh and overhaul the playing and coaching staff.

The changes have been clearly thought out as in December 2023 they originally offered Şahin a six-month post as Terzić's assistant.

Following Şahin’s appointment in the top job, Joao Tralhao and Ertugrul Arslan, alongside Piszczek, will provide support.

The new Bundesliga season will kick off on Friday, August 23.
