The 39-year-old now joins an elite duo consisting of Spaniard Fernando Alonso and Australian Mark Webber.

Kubica is part of a three-man AF Corse team founded by Ferrari, which includes a Russian with an Israeli passport, Robert Shwartzman, and the Chinese, Yifei Ye, who drove a Ferrari 499P.

The first in the cockpit, the Pole took the lead after two hours, which was maintained by Ye, driving second, and in the end Shwartzman fought a fierce battle, holding off the Toyota drivers.

Kubica’s team were fortunate to take the win after the Japanese driver, Kamui Kobayashi, who was driving a Toyota, was penalized for ignoring yellow flags. “We are happy;, it was a difficult race. We knew that the key to victory would be taking care of the tires. We drove tactically;, everything worked out;, we can be happy,” Kubica said at the finishing line. The WEC is the world's premier international sportscar championship.

The next round is scheduled for the Fuji circuit in Japan in two weeks. The season will end—as in recent years—on November 2 with the 8 Hours of Bahrain race.

In 2011, Kubica was seriously injured in a crash at the Ronde di Andora rally, in which he suffered partial amputation to his forearm, and fractures on his right elbow, shoulder, and leg.

The crash occurred just prior to a move from Renault to Ferrari, which scuppered the switch due to the seriousness of his injuries.
