Julia Szeremeta lost the gold medal fight in the 57-kilogram category to Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan.
The Taiwanese fighter and Algeria’s Imane Khelif were at the center of a media storm at the Paris Games owing to controversy over their genders.
Both were disqualified from the 2023 IBA Boxing World Championships because their test results revealed that their testosterone levels exceeded the allowed limits. However, the actual results themselves were never made public.
The International Boxing Association (IBA) ruled that: “Based on DNA tests, we identified a number of athletes who tried to cheat by posing as women.
“The test results showed that they had XY chromosomes. These athletes were excluded from the competition,” said IBA President Umar Kremlev at the time. However, the IOC stated during the Games that the pair qualified to compete under its rules.
The controversy that dogged the two boxers throughout the games could now resurface owing to tests that were taken after their mutual gold-medal triumphs.
“As a coach, I don't think about it; the games are behind us, and I'm looking forward,” Tomasz Dylak, Szeremata’s coach, said in an interview for the media outlets WP Sportowe Fakty. “But I know that both Yu-Ting and Imane Khelif were tested after the final fights of the games. And the results of hormone tests are expected in about three months.”
“We know that the matter is quite controversial, so there is a certain percentage chance that the final results will change,” Dylak added.
The results of hormone tests for Yi-Ting and Khelif will be available in early November at the earliest.
