State-owned Orlen, Poland’s largest energy concern, reported on Thursday that the Poznań station is part of the Clean Cities project, co-financed by EU funds under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and national funds from the ‘Green Public Transport’ program.

The station already has the capability to power a fleet of 25 hydrogen-fueled buses owned by the municipal transport company MPK. Over 15 years, Orlen will supply 1.8 million kilograms of hydrogen fuel for this purpose.

The facility operates around the clock and is also open to the public, meaning that not only MPK Poznań buses but also anyone with a hydrogen-fueled vehicle can take advantage of the refueling opportunity.

“The production and distribution of alternative fuels is one of the key elements of the Orlen Group's energy transformation,” said Artur Osuchowski, Orlen’s board member responsible for energy and energy transformation. “We see great potential in using hydrogen, especially in public transport.”

He further added that “The construction of refueling stations for this fuel is, on the one hand, a response to the growing demand of local authorities such as Poznań, which is developing urban transport towards zero-emission, and on the other hand, an important element in the implementation of the company's strategic objectives.”

The concern announced that the next hydrogen station would be opened later this year in Katowice, southern Poland, and further ones “are to be commissioned successively over the next few years.”

Orlen plans to open more than 100 hydrogen fuel stations by the year 2030.
