The major infrastructure initiativesituated between the cities of Warsaw and Lódż aims to serve 34 million passengers annually, a significant reduction from the originally projected 100 to 200 million.

Dr. Podgórski highlighted the importance of the project beyond passenger transport, emphasizing its potential to enhance logistics and cargo transportation in the region.

He pointed out that creating an innovative hub for cargo would benefit customers and improve profitability. The integration of high-speed rail networks, reducing travel times between major Polish cities, was noted as a critical component of the project.

The discussion also touched on the challenges of establishing a globally recognized hub without a national airline capable of competing with the best ones, like Lufthansa.

Dr. Podgórski suggested that while the new passenger numbers might seem conservative, the hub’s significance extends to neighboring countries like Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Belarus, and Ukraine, potentially elevating it to a regional gateway for global routes.

Financing for the project remains a critical issue, with the costs estimated at €30 billion, including the high-speed rail network.

Dr. Podgórski noted that European funds and contributions from different government ministries would likely be necessary.

Addressing concerns about the feasibility and risks associated with such large-scale projects, Dr. Podgórski acknowledged its high-risk nature but, on the other hand, presented its multifaceted benefits.
