Anora, starring Mikey Madison in the title role, is the latest in a series of films by Baker centering on sex workers. He dedicated the award to “all sex workers past present and future.” The film beat established cinematic greats such as Francis Ford Coppola and David Cronenberg for the prize.
“This has been my life’s goal, so to reach this place is... I’m going to have to do some thinking tonight about what's next,” Baker told Reuters after the ceremony.
The award was presented by George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars franchise, who was himself presented with an honorary award at the event.
