The Internal Security Agency (ABW) has been active since Tuesday, executing arrests and conducting searches across numerous properties. These actions stem from accusations of irregularities in the allocation of funds by the Justice Ministry during the tenure of former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro.
Charges have been filed against seven people by the National Prosecutor’s Office in connection with the so-called Justice Fund case.
The individuals detained include the former head of the Justice Fund Department at the Justice Ministry, the department's current deputy head, and the president of the Profeto Foundation—a recipient of the Justice Fund resources.
The court cited the risk of obstruction of justice, potential flight, and the likelihood of severe penalties as grounds for their detention.
The decision of the Warsaw court is not final, the people detained have seven days to appeal it.
Justice Fund case
The Profeto Foundation allegedly received PLN 66 million (EUR 15.3 million) without fulfilling the necessary formal and substantive criteria for such support.
The accused face up to ten years in prison on charges including abuse of power, document fraud, and causing significant financial damage. This case underscores the ongoing scrutiny and accountability efforts within Polish public funds' management.
The Justice Fund
The Justice Fund in Poland manages money that courts order the criminally charged to pay. This money, taken from those who have caused harm to others, is meant for good. It goes to victims of crimes and accidents, helps prevent these incidents, and saves lives.
Funds from the criminally charged have saved patients in over 150 hospitals across Poland, by providing nearly PLN 57 million (EUR 13,2 mln) worth of medical equipment.
