The paper quoted U.S. and NATO officials as saying further steps intended to ensure NATO’s long-term support for Ukraine would be announced at the alliance’s summit next week in Washington.

NATO told Poland’s state news agency PAP that it would station a senior civilian official in the Ukrainian capital to help coordinate the alliance’s political and practical support. The WSJ said the move was related to perceived higher probability of Donald Trump returning to the White House. Trump has in the past talked about pulling the U.S out of NATO and reducing Washington’s support for Kyiv.

NATO also plans to open a ‘Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine’ center in Germany involving around 700 soldiers from the U.S. and other member countries to coordinate military supplies and training.

A former U.S. ambassador to NATO told the daily the reason for the move was to wrest control of training and aid from Washington and bring it under the alliance’s remit.

In July, NATO defense ministers decided in Brussels that the alliance would play a greater role in coordinating aid for Ukraine.
