Speaking on Monday before an informal meeting of EU leaders in Brussels, Tusk said Kallas had a deep understanding of regional issues and the complexities of Ukrainian and Russian affairs.

“Kaja Kallas is a very good candidate; she knows very well the problems of our region and understands the Ukrainian and Russian realities,” said Tusk, adding that her “stance is identical to the Polish one.”

Following the June 6-9 European Parliament elections, Kallas is among candidates being considered for the position of the EU’s high representative for foreign and security policy.

Tusk also voiced his support for Ursula von der Leyen, who is eyeing a second term as European Commission President, noting her “full understanding of Polish issues.”

In related discussions, Tusk spoke to other leaders from the European People’s Party (EPP) about a new European Commission line-up.

Ahead of the informal summit, he consulted with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Friedrich Merz, the leader of Germany’s main opposition CDU party, and Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the head of Spain’s opposition People’s Party.

The EPP, the largest faction in the European Parliament, has endorsed von der Leyen as its primary candidate for the European Commission presidency.
