Kim described the new ties as forming an “alliance,” following Putin’s first visit to Pyongyang in nearly a quarter of a decade.

The agreement, termed a “comprehensive strategic partnership,” includes provisions for mutual assistance in case of aggression against either party, Putin confirmed.

This pact comes at a juncture, with both Russia and North Korea facing international isolation, closely watched by Seoul and Washington amidst concerns over heightened military collaboration.
Kim said the partnership is aimed at enhancing cooperation in politics, economy, and defense, asserting its defensive nature and commitment to peace. “Our relations have reached a new level of alliance,” he added.

At the start of their summit, the North Korean leader expressed “unconditional support” for “all of Russia’s policies,” including “a full support and firm alliance” for Putin’s war with Ukraine.

Putin, in turn, praised North Korea’s resilience against what he described as U.S. economic pressures and threats.

The visit saw a lavish reception for Putin in Pyongyang, featuring an honor guard and a warm welcome from Kim. The summit concluded with discussions at the Kumsusan Palace, underscoring the strategic importance both nations place on their strengthened alliance.

The pact between Russia and North Korea has geopolitical implications, potentially reshaping regional dynamics amidst global uncertainties. Western nations have expressed concern about the move’s impact on regional security and stability.

Both sides have denied allegations of illicit weapons transfers, despite ongoing concerns from the international community regarding North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs.
