National grid operator Ukrenergo said the energy facility in the Sumy region was damaged, forcing emergency electricity shut-offs for industrial consumers in the city of Sumy.
Ukrenergo planned scheduled cut-offs of electricity throughout the day across the country as domestic generation and electricity imports could not cover the shortfall.
Repair crews are working to restore power supplies.
The attack also caused damage to Sumy’s water system, leading to the loss of the city’s water supply.
There have been no immediate reports of casualties from the affected regions.
Since March, Russian forces have intensified their bombardments of the
Ukrainian power sector, knocking out the bulk of thermal and hydropower facilities and forcing extended blackouts across the country.
Although Ukraine’s energy system was left heavily crippled in the first year following Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, the country has lost approximately half of its available generation capacity in the last four months alone due to relentless missile and drone attacks by Russia.
The Sumy region, in particular, has endured frequent shelling from Russian positions along the border.
