Firefighters had been called out as many as 335 times by 11 a.m on Tuesday in the Małopolska province alone, with 118 of those calls being from the provincial capital Kraków, where widespread flooding was reported.

“We are pumping water out of cellars, flooded estates and underground garages,” a local fire service spokesman told the Polish Press Agency (PAP). “In Kraków, on the flooded Udziela Street, sandbags are being lined up and water is being pumped out."

Meanwhile, further east in the neighboring Podkarpackie province, the fire service was called out 39 times before midday, mostly due to flooding. Like Małopolska, Podkarpackie was put under storm alert with the bad weather expected to continue.

A local fire service spokesman advised people to remain at home if possible.
