Zdechovský emphasized the role of the EU Solidarity Fund, which has been in use since 2005 to provide rapid financial support for natural disasters like floods. “This is the best way to send money quickly to affected countries,” he said.
The floods in regions such as Moravia and Silesia in the Czech Republic were described as severe, though preparations had mitigated the damage in some areas.
He praised the Czech Army’s significant role in the response, saying, “We sent 2,000 soldiers to help clean and rebuild.”
Looking ahead, Zdechovský mentioned the need for long-term solutions and better planning to avoid future disasters.
He pointed to the importance of balancing development with nature, saying, “Sometimes it’s difficult to find the balance between nature and the 21st century.”
