Pellegrini made the statement following talks with his Czech counterpart, Petr Pavel, during his first official foreign visit, to Prague.

Pellegrini, who was sworn in on June 15, is a close ally of Prime Minister Robert Fico, who has made opposition to supporting Ukraine a cornerstone of his political agenda.

Despite the promise to not obstruct NATO, Pellegrini said Bratislava would not be sending troops to Ukraine, including for training missions.

Pellegrini and Pavel discussed security issues at Prague Castle on Wednesday, after which the two presidents said their countries’ positions on the war in Ukraine did not differ greatly.

Disagreement between Prague and Bratislava over Ukraine led Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala to pull out of intergovernmental consultations in March, and on Tuesday he said that it was too soon for the talks to be resumed. Pellegini said on Wednesday that he believed the consultations would be reinstated, though not immediately.

In addition to security issues, the two heads of state discussed bilateral relations and the possibility of joint attendance at multilateral meetings, such as of the Visegrad Group—a forum of the two republics along with Hungary and Poland—the Bucharest Nine, which groups the countries lying on NATO’s eastern flank, and the NATO summit, as well as cultural and sporting events.

Ahead of the two presidents’ meeting on Wednesday, Pellegrini paid his respects to victims of December’s mass shooting at Prague’s Charles University.
