The ammo depot that was attacked is located in the Podgorensky district of the Voronezh region in western Russia, more than 120 kilometers behind the frontline.

In a Telegram post, regional governor Aleksander Gusev said that the “air defense destroyed several drones” but that “their debris fell on an ammunition warehouse, causing a fire followed by the detonation of “explosives.”

Videos published on social media show that the fire and detonations lasted hours into the following day.
Although Gusev said that no one was killed in the attack, and that the situation is “under control,” The Moscow Times, an independent Russian media website, reported the region was put under a state of emergency.

“On an area of nine square kilometers, the enemy stored surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, shells for tanks and artillery, and boxes of ammunition for firearms,” a source within the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) told The Kyiv Independent on Sunday, admitting that SBU was behind the attack. The depot was targeted because Russians were known to use it to resupply their frontline troops in eastern Ukraine. Satellite images that surfaced on Monday show the depot had suffered extensive damage as a result of the attack.
